Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get enough attention—the power of individual donors, especially within the Black community.
A lot of Black-led nonprofits focus on grants (which are important, of course), but did you know that individuals make up 64% of all nonprofit donations? That’s billions of dollars given every year! And yet, Black-led organizations often miss out on this incredible opportunity because we haven’t built the same fundraising culture as larger, white-led nonprofits.
So, how do we change that?
First, let’s recognize the truth: Black people are already giving. A study found that Black households donate a higher percentage of their income to charity than any other racial group. The issue isn’t whether we give—it’s whether our nonprofits are effectively tapping into that generosity.
It’s all about relationships. When people feel connected to your mission, they’ll support you consistently. Make your donors feel like part of the family—send updates, highlight their impact, and celebrate their contributions.
And don’t be afraid to ask. So many organizations shy away from direct appeals, but giving people the opportunity to support a cause they believe in is not a burden—it’s an invitation.
Let’s start shifting the mindset. Black philanthropy is real, and it’s powerful. It’s time to embrace it.
